What is Absurdle?

Absurdle is Wordle's adversarial variant. It does not choose a target word before you start. Instead, it holds every possible answer open and responds to each guess in whichever way preserves the largest set of remaining candidates. The word becomes fixed only when you have narrowed the pool to a single option.

How to play Absurdle

  1. Type any five-letter word and submit it.
  2. Read the tile feedback, then enter another guess. There is no limit on attempts.
  3. Continue narrowing the possibilities until you force the game to reveal the answer.

Why play Absurdle

Absurdle suits players who find Wordle too easy. It never commits to a word, always choosing the response that leaves itself the most options. Your task is to corner a game that actively resists being solved. The author claims the optimal score is four guesses, showing how precise strong play must be. The game is free and requires no account. It has no daily puzzle or streak tracking.

Reading the feedback

Absurdle uses Wordle’s three tile colors, but assigns them to reveal as little information as possible instead of reflecting a fixed answer. In the settings, you can switch from colors to symbols.

Modes

Hard: You must use every clue you uncover in later guesses.

Challenge: A challenge variant you can enable in the settings panel.

Timed: A timed variant you can enable in the settings panel.

Big vocabulary: Switches the game to a larger word list.

Tips & strategy

Plan for the worst case. The best opener is the one that leaves the smallest possible largest group, since that is the group the game will give you.

Can I lose?

The standard game gives you unlimited guesses, so you cannot lose. A give-up button lets you stop whenever you want.
