What is Bracket City?

Bracket City is The Atlantic's daily word game by Ben Gross. Each puzzle presents a sentence filled with nested brackets—some three or four levels deep—that hide clues you must decode. Once all brackets are resolved, the sentence reveals a historical fact tied to that day's date. The game tracks your progress through a rank system, from tourist to kingmaker.

How to play Bracket City

  1. Read the sentence and identify every bracket. Some contain plain text; others contain more brackets.
  2. Find the deepest brackets, which contain no other brackets. These are your starting points.
  3. Solve those innermost clues first. Each answer makes the next level readable.
  4. Work outward through each layer until all the brackets are gone.
  5. Read the final sentence to discover that day’s historical fact.

The puzzle loads as running text with open brackets and several clues tagged with emoji. These emoji are part of the prompt, not decoration. The day's puzzle placed them at multiple nesting levels, including the deepest ones.

Tips for nested clues

Look for the mechanical entry point. Start with brackets that contain no other brackets. Do not guess where to begin.

Tracking your play

The browser stores three counters: current streak, longest streak, and total games played. You can complete missed days through the archive to maintain or rebuild your streak. Opening a past puzzle counts toward your total and updates your rank.
