What is Categlorious?
Categlorious is a nine-tile word classification game built around a single connector word that belongs to all four categories simultaneously. Instead of sorting words into four separate groups of three, you identify one word that fits every category, then match the remaining eight words into four pairs. The connector is not a trick to avoid but the solution itself.
How to play Categlorious
- Read all nine words and search for the one that works across multiple themes. That word is the connector.
- Select the connector first if you are confident. The game awards an Eagle eye bonus when your first tap identifies it.
- Choose three tiles to form a category, then tap Submit. Use Deselect to clear your selection or Shuffle to rearrange the layout.
- Complete all four categories in order. The counter at the top tracks progress out of four.
Why the connector changes the puzzle
Most sorting games penalize ambiguous words. Categlorious makes ambiguity the answer. The word that seems to fit everywhere does fit everywhere, and recognizing it early converts a nine-tile problem into four pairs plus a shared element. That structure allows the game to work with nine words instead of sixteen.
Reading the feedback
Selected tiles darken immediately. The grid shows a category counter at the top and four Mistake dots below the tiles. A timer runs in the bar with a pause button beside it. When a submission is one tile away from correct, the game tells you. Because the connector appears in every category, it can never be the wrong tile, so the feedback must point to one of the other two words in your selection.
Tips for solving faster
Look for the word with the most meanings. Go through the nine tiles and ask which one shifts depending on the sentence around it. That flexibility identifies the connector more reliably than any other pattern.
Once you find the connector, eight words remain to be sorted into four pairs rather than four groups of three. The problem shrinks noticeably.
Do not tap tiles at random to test combinations. The very first tile you touch is scored separately for the Eagle eye bonus.
Daily grid and streak tracking
Categlorious offers a daily nine-word grid with the date displayed in the game bar and a date selector next to it. The browser stores days played and your best streak. The site also provides leaderboards for comparison.
