What is Cryptle?
Cryptle replaces the keyboard with a lock mechanism. Six horizontal bands of letters appear on screen, each sliding left or right like the dials of a combination lock. A vertical window in the center reads one letter from each band, forming a six-letter guess from top to bottom. You spend a key to test each guess, and the daily puzzle provides only five keys.
How to play Cryptle
- Drag each band horizontally until the letter you want is centered in the vertical frame.
- Check that the six letters in the frame spell the word you want to submit.
- Press the key button to test your guess. The counter beside it shows how many key presses remain.
- Use the colors on the tested letters to adjust your next guess.
- Find the hidden six-letter word within five key presses.
Reading the feedback
The feedback uses letter color rather than tile backgrounds. All forty-five visible letters start in a neutral, untested state. After each key press, tested letters change to show whether they are correct or incorrect and whether they occupy the right position.
Why the dial interface matters
Most word games require typing. Cryptle presents all available letters at once and makes you rotate physical dials. This shift transforms strategy: instead of recalling and entering words, you manipulate visible combinations and weigh the cost of testing each arrangement. Five keys is a strict limit, making every test a deliberate decision.
Tips for efficient solving
Use each key press to test multiple changes at once. Testing only one new letter wastes the opportunity to gather information from all six bands simultaneously. Adjust several bands between guesses to maximize feedback.
Read the vertical column rather than scanning horizontally. The frame displays letters from top to bottom while the bands move side to side. Building the habit of reading downward prevents accidental submission of misaligned words.
Daily mode structure
Cryptle offers one puzzle per day under "Mot du jour." After completing or exhausting the five keys, the interface prompts you to return the following day for a fresh grid.
