What is Droplet?
Droplet is a falling-letter word game played in a six-column by eight-row well. Letters drop from the top and you steer them into columns to spell words horizontally or vertically. Bonus squares multiply letter or word scores, and your goal is to build valid words while keeping the stack below a red danger line. You have three lives, and the only way to lose one is by letting letters pile too high.
How to play Droplet
- Press Start to begin the letter sequence.
- Use the arrow buttons above each column to move the falling letter left or right.
- Spell words with adjacent letters in rows or columns. Diagonal words do not count.
- For safer scoring, place high-value letters on the 4L, 3L, or 2L multiplier squares at the bottom of the well.
- Use the 4W and 3W word multipliers at the top when you can afford to build the stack higher.
- Watch the stack height. You lose a life if the letters cross the red dashed line at the top.
Board layout and scoring system
The bonus layout is the same in every game. The top row has two 4W squares, with 3W below them and 2W farther down. Letter multipliers sit at the bottom: 4L, 3L, and 2L. Placing letters low helps you reach letter bonuses, while building high stacks makes word multipliers harder to use.
Your score, word count, and remaining lives are shown at the top. The “Found words” panel on the left lists each validated word. HOLD and NEXT flank the counters, showing your reserved letter and the next tile. Everyone plays the same sequence.
The daily tile order is identical for all players. Each day draws one hundred letters from a bag that mirrors standard English letter frequencies, so scores are directly comparable. The editorial notes confirm this shared distribution, which is unusual transparency for a daily puzzle.
Build flat and read backwards for vertical words
The game notes recommend keeping the floor even. A level stack leaves all six columns open as drop targets, giving you more routing options as letters arrive faster.
Vertical words can be up to eight letters long, but the stack rises as you spell, so you build them in reverse: the last letter of your word goes down first, and the first letter caps the column at the top.
Because the bonus map never changes, you can memorize it. Letter multipliers live at the bottom where tiles land naturally. Word multipliers live at the top where they cost vertical space. Plan your drops around this fixed geometry rather than reacting to each letter individually.
