What is Fourbe?
Fourbe is a two-stage word puzzle. Solve four definitions one letter at a time, then identify a hidden fifth word—the Fourbe—that connects all four answers. The connection may be a shared theme, or just one part of an answer may point to the common subject.
How to play Fourbe
- Solve each definition by typing its answer one letter at a time. Answers vary in length and style.
- Once all four answers are complete, enter the Fourbe: the word or concept that links them.
- If the connection remains unclear, use one of three hints—CATEGORY, CONTEXT, or VOWELS—but each hint costs an attempt.
- Review your result once you solve the Fourbe or run out of attempts.
The connection between answers is not always direct. In the tutorial example, SUNDAY ROAST contains the word ROAST, which points to the Fourbe, while the full phrase does not. Look for shared themes, partial matches, or hidden words rather than assuming every answer relates in the same way. The puzzle asks you to reread your completed answers with fresh attention.
Hints are not free
Each hint—CATEGORY, CONTEXT, VOWELS—consumes one attempt. Use them strategically. CATEGORY is most useful after you have entered all four answers and still cannot see the pattern. CONTEXT shows how each answer ties to the Fourbe. VOWELS reveals the vowels in the final word. Spending an attempt on a hint reduces your margin for guessing, so exhaust your own reasoning first.
Daily mode and archive access
The home screen displays the day's grid under the Play the Daily button. Past grids are available through an archive and themed packs, but the site lists archive and pack access as part of a subscription. The daily grid remains free.
