What is Hidden Joey?
Hidden Joey is a word puzzle based on kangaroo words: words that contain a smaller synonym in the same letter order. For example, BLOSSOM contains BLOOM. Each round shows a tiled word with a clue above it. Tap the letters that spell the hidden synonym from left to right, leaving the other letters unselected.
The daily puzzle has three short rounds, beginning with The Warm-up. It comes from an independent Australian developer.
How to play Hidden Joey
- Read the tiled word and the clue above it.
- Tap the letters that spell the hidden synonym, in order. Selected letters light up.
- Press Catch to submit your answer. To try again, clear the selection.
- Use a hint if you need one, then continue through the three rounds.
Your remaining tries are shown as kangaroo tracks beside TRIES. Each miss removes one track, so you can see how many chances remain. Selected letters turn gold where they appear and collect in a tray below the word, keeping partial guesses visible until you submit. Two misses on the same word eliminate it. Hints are free and appear in a fixed order: the joey’s length, one word ruled out, and a clue to its meaning.
Find the synonym hidden in the order
The joey must keep its letters in the original order; you can skip letters, but you cannot rearrange them. Read from left to right and look for a word hidden among the letters. That hidden word must also have roughly the same meaning as the host word. A shorter fragment counts only when it is a synonym, which rules out most of the fragments you notice first.
Two misses kill a word, so use the free length hint before making your second guess. The game rewards a particular way of looking: scan through the word for meaning while ignoring the letters in between. The answer has to work twice, in both spelling and definition.
Modes
The game offers one numbered daily puzzle, described as three short rounds and opening with The Warm-up. A Previous days link sits under the Play button on the front screen for accessing older puzzles.
Why play Hidden Joey?
Kangaroo words sound like a novelty until someone builds a proper game on them. This is a proper game: three rounds, a visible try counter, hints that arrive in an order that saves the best one for last. The mechanic stays satisfying because the answer has to work twice. The game includes a Reddit community link in its help panel and finds room for a note on the Guugu Yimithirr origin of the word kangaroo.
