Impress is a word game built around a limited-use letter system. A row of beige letter tiles appears on the board, with dots beneath each tile showing how many uses remain. Form words to build a bonus, then enter the hidden headline word that uses every letter on the board. Only the headline word collects the bonus and ends the round. If you use up a letter the headline needs, you lose.

To play Impress, form words from the available letters while keeping the headline word in mind.

Type or tap tiles to make a word of at least four letters, then confirm it with Press. Watch the ink drop beneath each letter: the dots show how many uses remain. The headline bonus grows with each word until it reaches its cap. Tap the rule tag, such as Gems or Vowels, to see that day's modifier. Type the headline before your ink runs out. It is the only word that earns the bonus and ends the round.

The core tension is scoring versus winning.

Impress uses one resource for both scoring and winning. Every word you play raises the bonus toward its cap, but also uses up ink needed to complete the headline. If you spend too much on the bonus, you may not have enough ink left to finish the headline. A single row of dots beneath each tile shows this trade-off, so the game needs neither a separate meter nor a countdown. The visual style supports the mechanic: cream paper, newspaper-red ink, and the language of composing a headline rather than filling a grid.

Reading the feedback

A rejected word shows a brief message at the top, such as “LAEOD isn’t a word we know.” The letters stay aligned above the tiles until you clear them. An accepted word scores points and reveals the matching boxes in the headline row. The bonus shown beneath those boxes starts at +15 and increases with each word you play until it reaches its cap. The penalty has no message: the row of dots beneath a letter simply empties.

Watch the rarest letter

The rarest letter on the board determines whether the round continues. Before playing each word, check that enough of it will remain for the headline. The help panel warns that letting its count fall too low ends the round. Using every letter in a word does not meet the condition, and neither does revealing the final box. The round ends and awards the bonus only when the headline is completed exactly.

Gems and rule tags

The board's two gems pay more than other words. Leaving one unplayed can trigger a Risk It offer at the end, which you accept at your own risk. Check the rule tag for that day's modifier, which changes how certain letters or word types score.

Tips for managing ink

Four letters is the minimum. Do not expect three-letter words to score. The keyboard handles everything: type to compose, Enter for Press, Space to shuffle tile display, Esc to clear.
