What is No Spell Check?

No Spell Check is a daily word game that tests spelling by ear. The word is spoken aloud but never shown. You hear the pronunciation, see the definition, and must type the spelling without autocorrect, red underlines, or any visual hints. The site's tagline captures its challenge: "Hard words · No hints."

How to play No Spell Check

  1. Open the daily page. The header displays the date, remaining attempts, and a timer starting at 0:00. Three dots below track your progress through the day's word set.
  2. Read the DEFINITION card above the Start button. This is your only written clue before typing.
  3. Press Start to hear the word spoken. Replay it as often as needed using the space bar.
  4. Type your spelling into the field. You have three attempts per word before moving to the next one in the set.

Why the definition matters

When two spellings sound identical, the definition becomes the tiebreaker. The FAQ confirms you can choose to read the definition without listening to the audio. Use it to distinguish between homophones or confirm which meaning matches the spoken word.

Modes

Daily Challenge: The home page delivers a dated set of words with three attempts each and a running timer.

Archive: Access previous days' words through the Archive link in the navigation bar. The FAQ mentions this feature for practicing past puzzles.

Tips for spelling by ear

Replay the audio multiple times before committing. The page explicitly invites repeated listening, and the space bar serves as a quick shortcut. There is no penalty for replaying.

Type carefully: the game does not correct your spelling or underline mistakes. The FAQ says this is deliberate, so each letter counts toward your three attempts.
