What is Noodle?
Noodle is a daily word puzzle by James Small where the start word is visible from the beginning and the challenge is finding a valid path away from it. You transform the word through exactly four steps, using four operations once each: Move shifts a letter to a new position, Add inserts a letter, Remove deletes one, and Replace swaps a letter. Every intermediate result must be a real word that has not appeared earlier in the round. There is no target word—some puzzles have thousands of winning paths. You start with three lives; each Undo or Hint costs one, and a dead end with no lives left ends the game. A new puzzle arrives daily, with difficulty increasing through the week.
How to play Noodle
Read the starting word and choose an operation: Move, Add, Remove, or Replace.
Tap letters to build the new word on the bottom line, then select Submit. The word must be real and unused in the current round.
Continue, using each of the other three operations once.
If the tiles turn red, you have reached a dead end. Use Undo to go back, at the cost of one life.
On your first move, tap Hint to highlight an operation that can work. Hint also costs one life.
Complete the fourth move to finish. You can then open Stats or Share. A game completed without losing a life is perfect.
Noodle is for players who prefer planning over guessing. The word is given, so the entire challenge is sequencing four operations so that every intermediate word exists and none repeats. It rewards knowledge of short words and thinking two steps ahead, since using Remove early can strand you later. There is no target word and no color feedback for closeness—only a dead end or a completed chain. A round is exactly four validated steps, and the only resource is three lives.
Reading the feedback
Noodle provides no color hints for closeness because there is no target. Each submitted step is validated against the word list before joining the chain. Red tiles signal a dead end: when the current word cannot be changed with remaining operations, tiles turn red and the only exit is Undo, which costs one life, as does Hint. Three lives cover a round. A dead end with no lives left is game over. Completing all four steps finishes the puzzle. Doing so without losing a life counts as a perfect game for achievements and statistics.
Modes
Daily puzzle: A new start word every day, harder as the week progresses. Completing puzzles on consecutive days builds a streak. Streak achievements grant a one-day streak freeze.
Practice round: A guided practice game accessed from the help panel, played before the daily puzzle to learn the four operations.
Hard Mode: A setting where no individual tile can be adapted more than once per puzzle, increasing the risk of dead ends.
Fiendish Mode: A setting that adds a fifth operation, Switch, which transposes two letters. All five must be used to win.
Tips and strategy
Look for Move first. It appears in only 2.4 percent of possible operations and is one of the hardest to spot, so find it before the other tools change the word.
Save Replace for later. It accounts for about 58 percent of the database, which makes it the easiest operation to find at almost any step.
Add and Remove cannot cancel each other out. If you add a letter and then remove it, you return to a word that has already been used, which the rules prohibit.
Think before submitting a move. Every Undo costs a life, and you start with three per round. Two wrong turns can leave you one dead end away from game over.
Expect fewer paths later in the week. The puzzles become harder, so plan the chain before making the first move.
In Hard Mode, each tile can be adapted only once per puzzle, which makes dead ends more likely. Leave it off until standard rounds feel easy.
Popular questions
Do I need an account?
No. The game opens straight to the board without a login. Statistics, streaks, and achievements build up as you play.
Is there a word I have to reach?
No. The round ends after you use all four operations; there is no specific target word. Some puzzles have thousands of possible winning paths.
What is a dead end?
A dead end is a word that cannot be changed using the operations you have left. The tiles turn red, and Undo is the only way out. If you reach one with no lives left, the game ends.
How many lives do I get?
You get three lives per puzzle. Each Undo and Hint costs one. After your lives are gone, the next dead end ends the game. You can also choose to give up.
Which words are accepted?
Submitted words are checked against a large list based on a customized English Speller Database with UK and US spellings. Start words come from a curated list of over 1,400 five-letter words, each with at least one playable path.
How do streaks work?
Completing puzzles on consecutive days keeps a streak. A dead end with no lives, giving up, or an unfinished puzzle ends it. Each streak achievement earns a streak freeze that holds the streak for one missed day.
