What is Origins Quiz?
Origins Quiz is a free daily etymology puzzle about the origins of words, names, brands, places and things. Ten clues point to answers whose first letters spell one hidden bonus word. The whole puzzle takes about five minutes and needs no account to play today.
How to play Origins Quiz
- Open the daily puzzle and read each of the ten clues about where a word, brand, place or name comes from.
- Type the answer for a selected clue. Correct answers turn green and score one point; wrong answers turn purple and let you keep trying.
- Watch the first letters of the ten answers form the bonus word. An eleventh clue helps you confirm that final word.
- Finish all eleven items, then read the short origin stories that appear for every answer.
- Return the next day at midnight Central Time for a new puzzle, or open the archive for past days once you create a free account.
The daily structure and archive
A new puzzle has appeared every day since 2 August 2026. Today’s set is always free. Past puzzles sit in the archive and require a free account; scores from the archive do not affect the daily streak. Each finished puzzle unlocks the full set of origin notes so players can see the history behind every answer.
Topics range across science and medicine, arts and entertainment, place names, myths, brand names, food, animals and more. Players can browse answers by these subjects after they finish.
Tips and practical notes
Score is simply the number of correct answers out of ten. An orange border marks any clue that feeds the bonus word; toggling the “Down” view shows the hidden word filling in as answers appear. Hard mode turns off automatic letter fill-ins between clues. Revealing an answer marks the puzzle as revealed rather than solved and will break an active streak.
The game runs in the browser and can be added to a home screen for quick access. No login is required for the current day, but an account stores progress, streaks and archive access.
