What is Outlier?

Outlier is a daily word game that gives every player the same 5-by-5 grid of 25 letters and ten attempts to form words of at least four letters. Scoring rewards rarity rather than length: the fewer players who find a word, the more points it earns, with a rarity scale that reaches 1,000. The ranking compares all players on that shared daily grid.

How to play Outlier

Treat the 25 letters as a pool; they do not need to touch or form adjacent chains. Make a valid word of at least four letters using only the letters shown, without using any letter more often than it appears in the grid. Enter the word and press SUBMIT. The counter shows how many of your ten attempts remain.

Continue until you have used all ten attempts or are satisfied with your score, then press LOCK IN to finalize your submission. A word’s rarity matters more than its length.

The scoring system inverts the usual word-game mechanic. A common four-letter word might score 24 points, while a rare four-letter word can score 81. Finding what everyone else finds contributes almost nothing to your rank. The goal is to dig into less obvious vocabulary rather than to maximize word length or optimize a path through adjacent tiles.

Game modes

Outlier Daily offers one grid per day, published at noon Eastern Time, with ten attempts and a global leaderboard. You can play at any time during the day and compare your score against other players worldwide.

Outlier Live (beta) runs lobby games with one-minute rounds. Each lobby uses the same grid for all participants, runs ten rounds, and awards the round to the player who submits the rarest word within sixty seconds. Lobbies can be private by invitation or open to anyone.

Grid types vary by character. Some days feature grids rich in possible words, others are Decoy boards that appear harder than they are, and Mystery days reveal their nature only after you finish. The grid's type appears above the board.

Reading the feedback

The official scoring panel displays two four-letter examples: one common word credited 24 points and one rare word credited 81. This contrast shows how rarity drives the score rather than length or frequency of letter use.

Strategy tips

Count duplicate letters before submitting. A word is rejected if it uses any letter more times than that letter appears in the grid, and this constraint trips up most double-letter attempts.

Focus on unusual vocabulary. Because the metric is rarity, a short odd word outscores a long obvious one. The fact that letters do not need to be adjacent removes tracing work and lets you concentrate on word recall.

Pace your ten attempts. You cannot revise a submission once confirmed, so use the full set of attempts to explore different corners of the letter pool rather than burning them all on variants of the same root.

Common questions

Does everyone play the same grid? Yes. One grid is published for all players each day at noon Eastern Time, and the leaderboard ranks everyone on that shared board.

Does the longest word win? No, the rarest does. The scoring system is built on rarity, and words found by most players contribute almost no points.

Do letters need to touch? No. The rule displayed under the grid and in the help panel states that letters can be located anywhere within the 25 squares.
