What is Semantle?
Semantle is a word game that evaluates meaning rather than spelling. You type a word, and the game returns its semantic similarity to a hidden target word, calculated using word2vec. There are no letter grids or boxes—just an input field, a Guess button, and a reference banner showing the similarity scores for the closest word, the tenth-closest, and the thousandth-closest of the day.
How to play Semantle
- Type a single word into the input field and click Guess.
- Read the similarity score returned and compare it to the day's scale at the top of the page.
- Use the feedback to narrow down your guesses. Attempts are unlimited, and once you enter the thousand closest words, a proximity column shows your exact rank.
- If you get stuck, use the Hint button or the Give Up button next to the field.
Reading the feedback
Each guess receives a semantic similarity score. When your word falls within the thousand nearest to the target, a proximity column appears and shows its rank. The top banner provides daily reference points—typically the scores for the closest word, the tenth, and the thousandth—to help you interpret whether a guess is getting warmer or staying cold.

Strategy tips
Use the daily reference points to calibrate your progress. A raw score means little without knowing where the closest, tenth, and thousandth words sit.
Change semantic registers instead of listing synonyms. Shifting from an object to its material, use, or context often produces bigger gains than trying slight variations of the same concept.
