What is SteppedUpDle?
SteppedUpDle chains four words in a single game, each one longer than the last: four letters, five, six, then seven. The twist is a shared budget of twenty guesses that covers all four stages without resetting. The board unlocks one stage at a time, with the remaining stages shown below in grey, and a single counter beneath the grid tracks your remaining guesses across the entire puzzle.
How to play SteppedUpDle
- Complete the current stage to unlock the next one. You must finish each word before moving on.
- Enter your guesses with the on-screen keyboard, then press Enter to submit. The keyboard updates its colors with the grid.
- Check the feedback for each letter: green means it is in the right place, yellow means it appears elsewhere in the word, and gray means it is not used.
- Keep an eye on the shared counter. It starts at 20 and drops with every accepted guess, regardless of which stage you are playing.
- Come back the next day for a new puzzle. The game resets at midnight and saves your progress locally under the current date.
The increasing word length changes the cost of each guess. A four-letter word yields limited information per attempt, while the seven-letter word at the end provides far more feedback but arrives when your guess budget is already depleted. Every guess on an early stage is borrowed from a later one, so efficiency early on creates breathing room at the finish.
Reading the feedback
Each submitted line is marked cell by cell, and the keyboard updates to match. The game uses green for correct placement, yellow for misplaced letters, and grey for absent letters. The real measure of progress is the counter beneath the board. It drops from 20 to 19 as soon as a valid word is accepted, and this single reserve covers all four words. A word the dictionary rejects stays on its line without being recorded, and the counter does not move.
Tips for managing your guesses
- A rejected word costs nothing. If the dictionary refuses a guess, it is not recorded and the counter does not change. Only accepted words use up guesses.
- The twenty guesses are shared across the game. Use too many on the four-letter word, and you will have fewer left for the seven-letter word.
- Locked stages still show their word length, so you can plan for them while solving the current stage.
- The four-letter word gives you the least information per guess. With only four squares, each guess reveals little, leaving fewer clues to work with in the later stages.
Popular questions
Do guesses reset to zero at each word?
No. The rules specify that guesses carry across all stages. The single counter under the board counts down throughout the entire game, regardless of which stage is active.
When does the new puzzle drop?
At midnight, according to the help panel. The local save is indexed by date, so progress is tied to the current day.
