What is Undersung?
Undersung flips the usual music quiz: instead of guessing a song from clues, you must name a song whose lyrics contain the given word. Each day displays one word, and scoring rewards obscurity. The less a track is streamed, the higher it scores. If the word appears in the title as well, the song is worth only half. The site supports French, English, and Spanish, and saves your daily attempts locally under a key combining date and language.
How to play Undersung
- Choose a language from the top-right menu: FR, EN, or ES.
- Read the word shown in large italics at the center of the page.
- Enter a song title or artist in the search field, then submit it.
- The line below the word shows the challenge number and how many tries remain.
- To catch up on an earlier day, tap one of the “Missed challenges” dots beneath the input field.
Scoring logic
The central rule inverts conventional music knowledge. A well-known hit that everyone recognizes will always score low because popularity reduces value. The game measures obscurity through listening data: a B-side or album track that few people stream earns far more points than a summer chorus. If the daily word appears both in the lyrics and in the title, the song's value is halved. This penalty pushes you toward tracks where the word hides in a verse rather than branding the song itself.
Game modes
Undersung offers four tabs. Daily Challenge presents the numbered word of the day with a tries counter. Practice mode generates random words and tracks your total rounds, cumulative points, and personal best. Time Attack adds a timer and maintains a best score per language plus a no-miss streak indicator. Leaderboard sits on the same navigation bar and displays rankings. All progress is stored locally without requiring an account, using a player identifier saved in your browser.
Tips for higher scores
Look past the first song that comes to mind. The obvious track is also the most streamed, so it will always be the least rewarding answer. Scan your memory for deep cuts, live versions, or lesser-known albums before submitting.
Verify the title before you confirm. If the day's word appears there, the song immediately drops to half value, even if it is otherwise obscure. A lyric-only match is always preferable.
Scores are kept separate by language. The save logic stores attempts under a key combining date and language code, and maintains distinct best scores for French, English, and Spanish. Switching languages does not merge or overwrite your records.
Five missed days remain accessible. The catch-up dots under the input field let you complete recent challenges you skipped, preserving your streak without forcing you to play every single day on schedule.
