What is Vocabulary?
Vocabulary turns word-definition review into tic-tac-toe. Each numbered square hides a question. Match the word with its definition before that square’s timer runs out, and complete a row, column, or diagonal to win. You do not need to fill the whole board.
Choose a 3×3, 4×4, or 5×5 board. Everyone receives the same grid for a given date and board size.
How to play Vocabulary
Choose the board size and open the day’s grid. Click a numbered square to reveal its question, then match the word with its definition before time expires. Keep selecting squares until you complete a row, column, or diagonal.
The board’s key design choice is that its timer changes from square to square. It is not simply a list of questions; it turns the board into a map of risks, where players must weigh their route against the time available. Blue squares allow thirty seconds, yellow twenty, red ten, and white squares have no timer. This works well for quick revision, which fits the page’s focus on students and exam candidates.
Reading the feedback
A square’s color gives two pieces of information in sequence. Before you answer, it shows how much time you have: thirty seconds for blue, twenty for yellow, ten for red, and no timer for white. Once you answer—or the time runs out—the square changes to Correct, Incorrect, or Timeout, recording the result.
Available board sizes
The page offers three formats, all with the same win condition:
The 3×3 board is the default short format on the day’s page. The 4×4 board uses the same row, column, or diagonal rule on an intermediate grid. The 5×5 board is the largest format and includes more questions in one session.
Tips for winning
Check a square’s color before opening it. Red squares allow only ten seconds; white squares give you time to think. Plan a possible line before opening squares instead of working through them in order. You win by completing an alignment, not by getting a perfect score. Leave the slower or untimed squares until the end, when the pressure is highest.
Common questions
Does everyone play the same grid?
Yes. For each board size, every player receives the same grid on the same date, so scores can be compared.
What happens when a square’s time runs out?
The square changes to the Timeout color, just as a wrong answer changes to Incorrect.
Can you replay grids from previous days?
Yes. Each daily grid has its own archive entry in the Vocabulary Archive section.
