What is Waffle?
Waffle is a letter-swapping puzzle that presents six crosswords already filled but scrambled. Twenty-one letters occupy a five-by-five grid with four cut-out corners, forming three horizontal and three vertical words. You swap letters in pairs to restore the correct order within 15 swaps. Every waffle can be solved in 10 swaps, and each swap saved becomes a star, up to five. Waffle Studio Ltd runs the game, funded by advertising and Ko-fi supporters.
How to play Waffle
- Examine the grid. The six words are already there; only the letters are out of order.
- Swap two positions by dragging one letter onto another.
- After each swap, check the color feedback to see which letters are in the correct places.
- Keep an eye on the swaps-remaining counter below the grid—it affects your final score.
- Finish the puzzle with swaps left over to earn stars. You can earn up to five.
Reading the color feedback
Green marks a letter in the correct position. Yellow means the letter belongs in the word but is in the wrong square. Gray means the letter is not in the word. At a crossing square, yellow means the letter belongs in either the horizontal or vertical word, though not necessarily both. The swaps counter is the only other feedback: every unnecessary move costs a star.

- Deluxe Waffle: A weekly grid separate from the daily puzzle.
- Number Waffle: The same swapping mechanic with numbers instead of letters. Rows and columns contain digits from 1 to 7.

- Archive: The complete history of past grids. These do not count toward regular statistics.
Strategy for efficient solving
Start with the crossing squares. A letter at the intersection of a row and a column belongs to two words, so one swap can put both closer to the ten-swap minimum.
Leave green letters where they are. Moving one wastes a swap and gives up a confirmed position.
Use archive grids to practise. They remain playable without affecting your statistics, so you can try different approaches freely.
Pay close attention to yellow letters at crossings. A yellow letter there belongs to the horizontal word or the vertical word, but not necessarily to both.
You do not search for words; you search for order. All letters are visible from the start, and the challenge lies in the swap budget, which punishes trial and error and rewards moves that fix multiple words.
