What is Woodle?
Woodle is a five-letter word puzzle that removes visual feedback from the board. You submit a word and receive two numbers: one counts correctly placed letters, the other counts letters present but misplaced. No squares change color automatically. You tap letters in your guess history to mark what you deduce, turning deduction into the core mechanic.
How to play Woodle
- Type a five-letter word using the on-screen keyboard and press ENTER.
- Read the two numbers beside your row: the top number shows correctly placed letters, the bottom shows letters present but in the wrong position.
- Submit additional guesses and cross-reference the number pairs to narrow down which letter belongs in which square.
- Tap any letter in your guess history to color-code it yourself: mark it as correctly placed, misplaced, or absent.
- Continue until you identify the word. The header displays the day's grid number.
Reading the feedback
Woodle gives only numerical output. A green number counts correctly positioned letters. An orange number counts letters that appear in the answer but occupy the wrong square. The game does not highlight individual letters. Any color you see on the board is one you applied by tapping your own guesses. This manual marking system is a notebook, not a hint.
Why the numbers matter
Because the feedback does not identify specific letters, you must reason by elimination. A guess with five unique letters makes the pair of numbers much easier to interpret. Swapping two letters between guesses isolates whether those positions changed: any difference in the green count can only come from the swapped pair. Without marking letters yourself, deductions made early will be lost by the time you reach your fifth or sixth attempt.
Tips for clearer deduction
Start with words that do not repeat letters. The number pair becomes ambiguous when two or more letters are identical. If your first guess returns a 1 and 2, you know one letter is correctly placed and two others belong somewhere else. A repeated letter makes that split harder to track.
Replay a word with one or two positions swapped. If the count of correctly placed letters increases, one of those swapped letters was wrong before. If the count stays the same, neither swap improved placement and you can rule out certain positions.
Mark your guesses immediately. The color tool is the only record of what you have deduced. Without it, you will re-check the same logic multiple times.
Popular questions
Why don't the squares change color?
Because Woodle responds with numbers, not visual hints. The colors visible on the board are those you apply by tapping letters in your history.
Does the game say which letters are correctly placed?
No. It reports how many are correctly placed and how many appear in the word without being in the right position. You identify which letters those are.
How many attempts do you have?
No limit is displayed. The site asks you to find the word in as few attempts as possible.
