What is HarryPotterDle?

HarryPotterDle is a daily Harry Potter puzzle collection that offers five different game modes on one page. Each mode asks you to identify a character, spell, or location from the books by typing names into the answer box. Classic mode uses an attribute grid similar to Wordle, while Quote, Spell, Description, and Location modes present text excerpts or descriptions and ask you to name what they refer to.

How to play HarryPotterDle

Choose one of the five modes from the icon row at the top of the page. Enter a character name, spell, or location, depending on the mode, then submit your answer to see the feedback. Keep guessing until you solve the puzzle; there is no limit on attempts.

In Classic mode, hints unlock after four and eight guesses. In Location mode, they unlock after five, ten, and fifteen guesses. Complete all five modes to finish the daily set.

Game modes

Classic compares each guess with the hidden character across several attributes. Green squares show matches, red squares show mismatches, and an arrow in the birth-year column points toward the character’s actual birth year.

Quote gives you a line of dialogue and asks you to identify the speaker.

Spell describes what a spell does without naming it. Enter its incantation.

Description shows a passage from the novels with the character’s name covered by black blocks.

Location does the same for a place mentioned or described in the books. The hints identify the book after five guesses, the surrounding area after ten, and the chapter title after fifteen.

HarryPotterDle favors readers who know the seven novels rather than viewers who only watched the films. Description and Location pull text directly from the books, so film-only knowledge will leave many excerpts opaque. Spell mode tests whether you remember the incantations rather than just the effects shown on screen. Each mode takes one to two minutes, and the full set can be cleared in under ten minutes. The unlimited guess structure keeps pressure low, which makes this a poor fit for players who prefer high-stakes single-attempt dailies. There is no archive to replay past puzzles.

Strategy tips

Start Classic mode with a well-documented character rather than an obscure favorite. The more attributes your guess shares with the answer, the more information each row reveals. The birth year column does the most work because it gives you a directional arrow rather than a binary yes-or-no, so one guess with a known birth year cuts the candidate pool in half.

Do not overthink early guesses. There is no penalty for extra attempts, and reaching four tries unlocks whether the character is alive or dead, while eight tries reveals their occupation. These hints are cheaper to obtain through guessing than through mental effort.

In Location mode, the chapter title hint at fifteen guesses often gives the answer away directly, so push toward ten guesses where the surrounding area is revealed instead.

Reading Classic mode feedback

Each guess in Classic mode produces a row of colored squares, one per attribute. Green means your guess matches the answer on that attribute, red means it does not. The Born column adds an up or down arrow to show whether the answer was born earlier or later than your guess. Above the input box, two tips unlock as you accumulate guesses: dead or alive status at four tries, and occupation at eight tries. The site also asks you to pick a Hogwarts house when you first visit.

Common questions

The game is not official. The in-game information panel states it is an unofficial fan-made app with no affiliation to the Harry Potter brand or the Wizarding World.

The Description and Location modes pull their text directly from the novels, not the films. Character names and other identifying words are censored with black blocks, and you must identify the character or place from the surrounding passage.
