What is Yeardle?
Yeardle presents three historical events that occurred in the same year. You must identify that year using a keypad that includes a minus key for BC dates, so your answer can be three or four digits.
How to play Yeardle
- Read all three events at the top of the page. They are unrelated except for happening in the same year.
- Enter your guess using the keypad and press ENTER. Use the minus key to mark BC dates.
- Decide whether to guess earlier or later based on your result, then try again. You have eight attempts total.
No direction feedback
Yeardle withholds higher-or-lower hints after each guess. This turns the puzzle into a genuine search problem rather than a straightforward bisection. The only optional help is a #gimmedirection link above the keypad, which applies to your first guess only. Beyond that, you must rely on your own timeline knowledge to narrow down the correct year.
Tips for a stronger guess
At least one event usually includes a proper noun such as a person, city, or war that anchors the era. Read all three clues before entering a number rather than committing to the first event you recognize.
Take the #gimmedirection link when the period is completely unfamiliar. It provides a nudge on whether your opening guess should move forward or backward in time.
Modes
The site offers a Daily puzzle that resets at midnight for all players, plus a second board accessible through the "Play a new game" link under the keypad. Both modes follow the same rules and eight-attempt limit.
