What is FlagGuessr?
FlagGuessr presents one country flag per day at 4x zoom, revealing roughly a quarter of the design. Each wrong guess pulls the camera back through 2.5x, 1.75x, and 1.25x, until the fifth attempt shows the full flag. The zoom progression is the core mechanic: the tighter the crop, the higher the potential score.
How to play FlagGuessr
- Examine the zoomed crop. At 4×, you will usually see a single color field and, if there is one, part of an emblem.
- Type a country name in the input box, select it from the autocomplete list, and click Guess.
- A wrong answer adds a red cross beside the country in slot #1 and reveals the continent hint.
- Continue with the remaining slots as the image zooms out, or submit your answer when you are confident.
- The puzzle ends when you complete it or use all five guesses. The results card appears immediately afterward.
FlagGuessr assigns numerical value to early solves. A first-guess correct earns 10,000 points and the title VEXILLOLOGIST, descending to 8,000, 6,000, 4,000, and 2,000 for later slots. Missing all five returns zero and the label UNGUESSABLE. The results card then compares your performance to the global player pool, shows which country most people guessed incorrectly, and includes a short vexillology note explaining the flag's design origins. This feedback structure turns a quick puzzle into a skill-testing format worth improving at.
Reading the feedback
The board shows incorrect guesses with red crosses, the countries you have submitted, and the current zoom level. After each round, the results card displays the full flag, the correct country, and a short explanation of its symbolism or history. Emotion labels run from VEXILLOLOGIST at the top to CLUELESS near the bottom. The card also shows your percentile rank, the most common wrong guess among players, yesterday’s answer, and your current streak.
In Daily Flag, everyone gets the same numbered puzzle. You have five guesses, and the puzzle changes at midnight UTC. Missing a day breaks your streak.
After completing the current puzzle, you can open a calendar of past puzzles and solve earlier flags. This also lets you repair a broken streak.
Pay attention to shade, not just the basic color. A dark forest green and a bright emerald can distinguish tricolors that otherwise share the same palette.
If the crop is unclear, consider making a deliberate guess at 4x. A wrong answer reveals the continent hint, and that regional information can be worth more than the points you lose.
Look at what the crop leaves out. A large area of empty color on one side often means the emblem or another distinctive feature is just beyond the frame.
The third guess is especially useful. At 1.75x, partial emblems often become recognizable, and 6,000 points is the last score bracket that stands out in the rankings.
