What is OpenGuessr?

OpenGuessr is a free street-view geography game that drops you into a panorama and asks you to identify the location. The site title calls it a free GeoGuessr alternative, and it delivers that format: a full-screen street view, a Map button to reveal the world, and a Guess button to lock your pin. Ads support the platform, and no account is required to play.

How to play OpenGuessr

OpenGuessr opens a panorama immediately in Singleplayer World mode. Look for clues in the street view, such as signs, landscape, and road features. Open the map, place your pin, and tap Guess. Check the distance and verdict, then press Continue to move to the next location. You can keep playing for as many rounds as you like; the default mode has no round limit.

The game removes much of the friction from street-view games. You can start without an account, and one click takes you from the landing page to a panorama. The map stays hidden until you open it, leaving the screen clear for exploration. Instead of numerical scores, the game gives each guess a playful verdict. Missing by 3,527 km earns a shrug, not a lecture. You only need to sign up to save your score, and the game says so clearly.

Reading the feedback

After each guess, the result shows your pin beside the true location on a map, gives the distance in kilometres, and adds a one-line verdict. Without an account, your scores are not saved. The result screen includes a “Sign up to see & save your score” prompt, while the Continue button takes you to the next location.

Modes

Singleplayer, World is the default endless solo mode. It uses random locations around the world and gives you one guess per location, followed by a distance-based verdict.

Tutorial is a guided first game offered to new players through a prompt in the corner.

Tips and strategy

  • Script and alphabet are the fastest tells. A Cyrillic street sign narrows the world to a dozen countries before you read the landscape.
  • Road surface matters. Unpaved village roads with utility poles lean rural Eastern Europe or Central Asia far more than Western Europe.
  • Volume is the practice plan. With no round budget in the default mode, chain as many guesses as needed to build pattern recognition.
