How to play Peele

  1. Read the starting word shown above the board.
  2. Type a new three-letter word that differs from the current word by exactly one letter, then press Enter.
  3. Continue from each accepted word, changing only one letter per step while keeping the other two letters in place.
  4. Reach PEE. Compare your total moves with par, the shortest route found in the game’s dictionary.
  5. Use Undo to remove the last accepted move or Reset to restart the same puzzle. Rejected guesses do not count as moves.

A small ladder, step by step

Each step must produce a real three-letter English word from the game’s list. The starting word itself does not count as a move. Letters that already match the target can still be changed if that helps open a better route. Matching letters are highlighted only as a visual aid; they are not locked.

A direct change that alters more than one letter is rejected. The words between the start and PEE make the ladder possible. Daily puzzles rotate through a fixed set of verified starting words.

Find the shorter route

Try changing one position at a time. A vowel swap or a new first letter can open useful connections. Working backward from PEE also helps: identify familiar words that sit one letter away from the target.

A temporary detour that removes a matching letter is sometimes useful. If a path stalls, Undo and explore another branch. More than one shortest route can exist. The highlights show spelling differences; they do not force any letter to stay fixed.

Why a move may be rejected

An entry must be exactly three letters and differ in precisely one position from the previous accepted word. Changing nothing, swapping two letters, or rearranging letters all fail. The word must also appear in the game’s reviewed English list of 532 three-letter words.

That list includes everyday slang, plurals, and common inflections. It excludes proper names and initialisms. A rejection means the word is absent from this specific dictionary, not that the word never exists elsewhere.

Daily or Practice mode

A new daily start appears at midnight UTC. Everyone on the same UTC date and game version receives the same word. Your device clock sets the date. The daily schedule cycles through 64 verified familiar words and eventually repeats.

Practice mode supplies a different start whenever you want. Daily and Practice progress save separately in the browser. Only the first daily finish for a given UTC date counts toward statistics.

Count the moves and share carefully

Finishing shows your accepted moves and the par score. Any completed route is a win; a longer path still counts. Par is calculated by breadth-first search over the licensed dictionary used by the game.

After finishing, Share result produces a tile pattern and your move count without revealing the route words. You can copy the text, open a draft for X or WhatsApp, or simply close the menu. Nothing posts automatically. Progress stays on the device; clearing site data removes it. No account or payment is required.
