What is Ravel?

Ravel is a name-guessing game for world countries that combines geographic and alphabetic clues. Each guess produces four attribute comparisons (Continent, Area level, Last letter, #Words) marked = or ≠, plus a color code that shows whether the answer lies earlier or later in the alphabet. The game tracks eggs—penalties for ignoring previous hints—and the number allowed varies by difficulty level.

How to play Ravel

  1. Select your difficulty through Change difficulty: Practice, Challenge, or Superpro.
  2. Type the first three letters of a country name and pick it from the dropdown.
  3. Check the four attributes against the hidden country: continent, area level, last letter, and number of words.
  4. Read the color of your guess. Red means search earlier in the alphabet toward A; blue means search later toward Z. Green letters mark correct initials; grey offers no directional information.
  5. Enter another guess that respects all previous hints, or risk collecting an egg. Watch the progress bar to gauge how close you are.
  6. Continue through up to seven attempts. The country is revealed after the seventh guess, or earlier if you win or exceed your egg limit.

Why the dual feedback matters

Ravel uses continent and area clues to test geographic reasoning, then switches to dictionary logic for alphabetical position. The four attributes rule out groups of countries, while the color code narrows the alphabetical range. Each guess identifies a possible country and narrows the search.

In Practice mode, you can ignore up to seven hints. Challenge allows five, while Superpro requires every guess to follow all previous clues. The egg mechanic becomes stricter in each mode.

A green flag means your guess followed every hint. A red flag means you collected one or more eggs. An open red envelope means you lost and reveals the answer.

For the four attributes, = confirms a match and ≠ rules out that property. In the color code, red points toward A, blue points toward Z, green letters confirm the correct initials, and grey gives no alphabetical direction.

Difficulty modes

Practice (level 1) allows up to seven guesses that ignore a hint, so you can learn the system without pressure.

Challenge allows five such guesses.

Superpro allows none. Each guess must fit every hint already shown.

Guessing tips

The #Words attribute usually narrows the country list more than the continent does. Single-word country names are a smaller group than compound names, so a match or mismatch can eliminate many options.

Use the color code to narrow the alphabet. Guessing once near A and once near Z gives you a faster range than choosing countries by region alone.

In Superpro, check the attribute grid and color history before each guess. A guess that contradicts an earlier hint ends the game immediately.

Common questions

How many attempts do I have to find the country?

Seven. The game reveals the answer after the seventh guess, or earlier if you solve it or run out of eggs.

What does an egg mean?

An egg marks a guess that ignores a hint already given. Practice allows seven eggs, Challenge allows five, and Superpro allows none.
