What is SHIFT?

SHIFT is a daily 3×3 sliding puzzle with eight numbered tiles and one empty space. The page displays only the grid, a stopwatch counting to the hundredth of a second, and a move counter. The rules end with one line: "Fastest time wins." Each puzzle carries a number, and the menu offers three entries: Game, Leaderboard, and Feedback.

How to play SHIFT

  1. Open the How To Play window to see the solved grid and the Play Today's Puzzle button.
  2. Click a tile next to the empty space to slide it into the gap, or use keyboard arrows to move tiles without aiming.
  3. Arrange tiles 1 through 8 in order from left to right, top to bottom, leaving the empty space in the bottom-right corner.
  4. Watch the timer and move counter, which both remain at zero until you make your first move.

Why the minimal design matters

The sliding puzzle is a familiar pocket toy, and SHIFT uses that familiarity on purpose. Because the problem is known, only execution remains. The game removes theme, color, and extra features, leaving a timer and a leaderboard. The single animated element is the mini-grid in the help window, whose caption alternates between "SOLVED" and "IT SLIDES INTO THE SPACE."

Tips for faster solving

Use keyboard arrows instead of mouse clicks. In a game timed to the hundredth of a second, avoiding the need to aim at tiles is the simplest speed gain.

Solve the first row first, then the left column, and save the final four squares for last. The rules require the empty space to end in the bottom-right, which dictates this standard approach to sliding puzzles.

No move limit applies

The rules describe the target arrangement and state "Fastest time wins." The move counter runs beside the timer without an upper bound. Time determines the winner, not efficiency.
