What is States?
States is an American geography quiz played by clicking regions on an unlabeled map. The game displays a target—a state, a major city, or a county—and you must locate it using a two-click system: the first click highlights your choice in purple, the second confirms it. A banner tracks your score, streak, timer, and accuracy in real time.
How to play States
- Read the target name shown at the top of the screen and the progress counter.
- Click the region you think matches the target. It highlights purple but does not submit yet.
- Click the same region again, or press the ✓ button, to confirm your answer.
- Before confirming, click elsewhere to change your selection without penalty.
- Use the mouse wheel to zoom and drag to pan the map. A reset button returns the view to default.
Modes
Quick Play: Featured mode with 5 to 50 targets mixing states, cities, and counties. Games last 2 to 5 minutes and can be shared by link to challenge friends.
US States Quiz: 52 places including the 50 states, District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
US Cities Quiz: 50 major cities from New York to Anchorage.
US Counties Quiz: Expert level with 3,143 counties and equivalents.
Why the two-click mechanic matters
Clicking a shape is more direct than typing a name. You either know the location or you do not. The two-click confirmation is a safety net: the first click shows what you are targeting before you commit. Use it to verify small or adjacent regions, especially in dense areas like the East Coast.
The game scales from 52 entities in the states set to over 3,000 in the counties set with the same mechanic. The counties mode is the kind of challenge that looks simple until you realize county names repeat across states, so the first question is which state, not which county.
Tips for better accuracy
Zoom once on crowded areas rather than zooming in and out for every target. The timer runs while you manipulate the map, so a single zoom on the Northeast saves more time than repeated adjustments.
County names repeat across states. When the target is a county, identify the state first, then narrow down the county within it.
The first click does not count as an answer. If you are unsure, click to see the highlight, check the shape and position, then decide whether to confirm or move.
