What is TimeGuessr?
TimeGuessr adds a temporal dimension to geography guessing. You examine a historical photograph and must identify both the location where it was taken and the year it was captured.
How to play TimeGuessr
- Select a game mode from the home page: daily challenge, random game, or a community-created set.
- Examine the photograph for dating clues such as architecture, clothing, vehicles, and signage.
- Submit your answer for both location and year.
- Review your score out of 10,000 per round across five rounds for a total of 50,000 points.
- Share your result via emoji grid or detailed format, then start a new game or replay.
The two-question mechanic
Location and date require different reading strategies. Clues that identify when a photo was taken—film stock, grain, color process—often differ from those that indicate where, such as regional road signs or architectural styles. This dual challenge rewards both historical knowledge and geographic recognition. The same image becomes two separate puzzles depending on which question you are answering.

Random: Play an on-demand game drawn from the archive.
Community: Player-created sets that expand the available content beyond the daily rotation.
Tips for stronger guesses
Date the photograph before committing to a location. Film characteristics and color processing narrow the decade, which then tells you what architecture and infrastructure should appear in that era. A 1970s streetscape looks different from a 1990s one, even in the same city.
Cars and road signs are the most reliable clues. Both change frequently and both carry regional markers. A license plate format or a specific sign standard can place you within a country or decade.
