What is Spectrle?
Spectrle converts a film into a color disc made from 500 images sampled at regular intervals, sliced and arranged in a circle. You must identify the film within five guesses, using the tagline and release year provided at the start. The site also offers a video game version and two nine-square grid modes.
How to play Spectrle
Look at the disc above the guess field, which shows the film’s release year and tagline. Enter a title and select it from the autocomplete menu to submit your guess.
Each incorrect guess or skip unlocks the next text hint and redraws the disc with fewer images. The color slices then become wider and easier to read. The hints appear in this order: tagline at 500 images, director at 100, cast at 50, plot at 30, and a title synonym at 10.
You have five attempts to identify the film. Your result is compared with the day’s par score.
Understanding the disc structure
The disc is a visual timeline. It starts at the top and moves clockwise, following the film from its opening credits to its final shot. A shift toward ochre in the second act, or a persistent block of blue, can suggest a mood or setting before any individual frame is recognizable. With ten slices, recognition becomes almost instinctive.
Reading feedback
The disc becomes coarser after each failure, which paradoxically makes it easier to read. Ten slices reduce ten shots to their dominant colors. If you guess a title from the correct franchise, the suggestion appears in yellow to show that you are close. Skipping costs one attempt, just like a wrong guess, and unlocks the same sequence of hints.

Nine titles are fixed on the board. Drag nine discs onto them, then use Lock In to check the grid. Correct pairs turn green and lock. You have five confirmations to solve all nine.

Past puzzles remain playable and can be filtered by genre, decade, and par.
Tips for better guesses
Read the disc as a timeline, starting at the top and moving clockwise. Zoom in on individual slices. At that scale, a set or lighting choice often becomes identifiable. Skipping is not a mistake. It unlocks the same hints as a wrong guess for the same cost. Use it when stuck.
The par score varies by film based on title popularity. Solving a puzzle in three attempts does not carry equal weight across different days.
